UPLIFT sends missionaries into inner-city communities

By CYNTHIA ROBERTSON

Urban People Lifting in Faith and Trust

— or UPLIFT — has been coordinating with churches in the community to garner volunteers with a passion to serve. With several programs in the neighborhoods of City Heights, Golden Hill and downtown, UPLIFT has made a positive difference in the lives of people whom are often overlooked. The two main programs of this Christian

organization, formed in 1987, are Kids at Heart and Swimming Upstream. Its mission is to provide the spiritual, social, and support services to positively change lives and transform San Diego’s inner-city communities. “I chose to remain involved with UPLIFT because it is an amazingly easy way to put faith into action,” said Linda Guzzo, president of UPLIFT. Volunteer tutor Bob Annett said that was

exactly why he began tutoring for Kids at Heart 15 years ago. “When Burt Ely, the founder, was invited

to speak at our Bible study, I was hooked,” Annett said. While the San Diego City median income

is about $54,000, the area that UPLIFT serves is only $16,000. The percentage of children living in poverty is above 50%. “I imagine that the 2010 statistics will be

even more dramatic,” Guzzo said, adding that children living in poverty have less of a chance to perform at their appropriate academic grade level. The good news is that UPLIFT is helping

to reverse those statistics, child by child, explained Julie Watson, developmental director. “The volunteers are helping to

transform the city from the grassroots up.” Kids at Heart (KAH) is the largest

program of UPLIFT, at 10 different sites serving 135 kids with 130 tutors. “We’re short about five tutors now,” said

Perla Lira, program manager for KAH. “But the tutors we do have, have been doing their job.” Lira noted that the children have had

a 74% increase in grades and test scores at school. Juliana Karras has been a tutor with

KAH since last August. She discovered the opportunity through her roommate at Point Loma Nazarene University. Karras decided to step in as a tutor, matching up with a little girl. “She was very shy, but after working

with her for awhile, she gets very excited and runs up to hug me,” Karras said. That eagerness in being with their role model and mentor is a hallmark of KAH. Terry Senty, who is the Senior Partners Plus Coordinator, also drives the bus taking the kids to their tutoring sessions. “It’s not unusual to see the younger siblings stand on the porch sobbing and saying, ‘I want to come, too,’ as their brother or sister goes to meet their tutor,” Senty said. Need advice about your sex life?

Penners answer questions about April 24 seminar in Carlsbad

Drs. Cl i f ford and Joyce Penner,

internationally known sex therapists, educators and authors will be coming to North Coast Calvary Chapel in Carlsbad on April 24. The one-day seminar is titled, “Igniting

Your Sex Life.” Good News, etc. interviewed the Penners to uncover what they had to say about sex and relationships:

From this one-day seminar, how can sex lives improve?

It is amazing the change that can happen

from gaining new information, getting to know yourself and getting to know your spouse.

Is having great sex a physical attraction or does it involve more?

Physical attraction gets a sex life going; it takes a lot more to keep it going!

What can couples do to ignite their sex life?

Come to a one-day seminar, “Igniting

Your Sex Life” lead by Drs. Clifford & Joyce Penner!

It’s been said that sex is the glue that keeps couples together. Is that true?

We would say that it is the lubricant that minimizes friction and keeps the marriage running smoothly.

What are your comments about the book

Just Do It? Can a sexual exercise of 100 consecutive days of sexual relationship really help improve a marriage?

That idea is great for a healthy marriage,

not a fix for a marriage or a difficult sex life. In addition, the reason the Just Do It worked for the Brown’s was because it was her idea not his. From our perspective, this suggestion would only work if the woman suggests it rather than feels pressured by him to do it.

If a couple is having sexual problems, what should they do?

Get help now! Sexual problems don’t

self-correct; in fact, they create a downward self-feeding spiral.

There seems to be so many commercials

on TV about ED. Is that just the drug companies trying to sell more drugs or is this a national problem?

ED is a lot of both: it is a national

problem on which drug companies are capitalizing.

Do women have an equivalent

problem?

Men are more troubled with arousal

– ED; women have more difficulty with release – Orgasmic Inhibition or letting go, making the shift from passive arousal to active release.

Depends on the couple: some men want

more sex than their wives; some women want more sex than their husbands.

What is the average time married couples have sex?

Most couples have sex connected with

going to bed — so their bedtime is the usual time. Some do have sex connected with waking up in the morning.

Is there a difference between how

long a couple has been married to how frequent they have sex? For example, a couple married 10 years versus a couple married 3-5 years?

The frequency of sex over the years of marriage is affected most by pregnancy and the arrival of children. The statistics indicate a decrease in sex during pregnancy and then another drop after the birth of the first child. There are always exceptions. Some couples maintain their frequency during and after childbirth; others drop in frequency even without pregnancy and childbirth.

Whether you are married 5 years or 50

years, couples can maintain an active sex life because . . . . .?

That is how God designed us, as well as what He intended for us.

Talking about sex can be uneasy for a

couple. How would you encourage them to come to the seminar?

Couples who have difficulty talking

about sex find that the guided structure for sharing with their spouse makes it easier to talk to each other. As they get more comfortable, they open up; as they open up, they get more comfortable! By the end of the seminar, they will be talking freely.

Will couples gain skills to discuss

their sexual likes and dislikes as well as differences?

Absolutely and a lot more!

What Scriptures do you bring out about

God’s design for sexual pleasure?

The Bible endorses sexual pleasure in marriage from the beginning to the end. We use Old and New Testament teachings to endorse sexual pleasure between a husband and wife.
