T
he business world is a daunting place right now, as the worldwide
economy plunges into the darkness of a recession. But don’t get caught
up in the panic, take positive steps to protect yourself and you’ll be
riding high again when the economy recovers. I’ve lived and worked through a
number of recessions, which is why I feel now is the perfect time for me to give
you my best survival advice through this issue of Today’s Business Woman.
Now this may surprise you, but I genuinely believe that an economic
downturn is the best time to start up a business, so we’ve got all the advice
you need in our ‘Business is born’ feature, as well as invaluable advice on one
of the most important issues for any employer, recruitment. Matching the right
staff to the right job is make or break for any business, so you should never
rush the hiring procedure, and I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve for unravelling
the carefully polished interviewee façade too!
Something that always dismays me is the pressure that women today are
under to “have it all”, particularly in this country. This is an impossible challenge
for anyone, man or woman, and the now common expectations need to be
destroyed. Read my experiences on being a working mother on p. 60.
