target, and the shell fish are piled high on top of
each other. It’s old, it’s original, it’s undisturbed.
The only thing you don’t seem to see is other
human beings! What is amazing too about this
place is that because the water is reasonably
clear and shallow, it can lend itself to sight
fishing wonderfully. The fish, rummaging for
shellfish in the scattered soft sandy areas
between the rocks, stir up huge billowing clouds
that drift in trails down stream , this can
sometimes make spotting feeding fish a breeze.
Besides sight fishing, the big rocks at the top of
each new pool provide slack water below
and the shady overhanging trees are
both reliable fish producers. The fish,

and feeding on a diet of protein rich shellfish, are

size of fish is in the mid teens. We have also had
a good sprinkling of twenties and very few
singles. When you take into account the width of
the river, about 70 yds, and the average depth of
about 2 feet, it is pretty remarkable.
There are very few access areas along the
river, leaving huge undisturbed sections of prime
fishery. By using a canoe, we can navigate the
rocky rapids and get on down to those forgotten
areas where all you can hear is the constant
babble of the water and the call of the Ospreys;
this is where the fish are obliging during the hot
summer sun.
As for tackle set up and bait…….because of the
rocks and frequency of getting hung up, end
rigging is best kept simple. I use 15 lb mono, a
semi fixed lead, about 8” of 15lb mantis or gorilla
