GMB makes no apology for demanding a proper safety
net for its members and will continue to campaign for
benefits to be upgraded and linked to earnings. Even if
e f
politicians do not recognise capitalism’s flaws, GMB does,
and it opposes the government’s drive to cut the existing
safety net against its effects.
The union has made it clear to senior politicians that their
our
plans directly contributed to Labour losing the so-called
‘safe seat’ of Glasgow East in July’s by-elections. It is clear
that the government’s plans must be dropped: they have
already proved to be a vote loser.
In this booklet, GMB has compiled a full list of all the
existing state benefits, grants and support that GMB
members and their families are entitled to claim if their
income falls or if they lose their jobs. The list is extensive
and covers all the main state benefits, including: Income
Support; Housing Benefit; Child Benefit; Council Tax Benefit;
Tax Credits; Mortgage Interest Run On; Reduced Earnings
Allowance; Statutory Sick Pay; Injury Benefit; Hospital Travel
Costs; Funeral and Bereavement Payments; Cold Weather
Payments; Bus, Coach and Rail Passes; Pension Benefits;
Disability Benefits; free passports; free TV licences; and
Child Trust Funds.
This list will be regularly updated and can be accessed
online at www.gmb.org.uk. Alternatively, members can
obtain copies by contacting GMB at: 22-24 Worple Road,
London, SW19 4DD, or by telephoning 020 8947 3131.
