To claim you need to give proof of qualifying benefit, tax credit
exemption certificate, or an NHS low income support scheme
certificate from the NHS hospital or clinic you are visiting. ag
■ Funeral Payments
If you are on a low income and you need help to pay for a funeral,
you may be eligible for this benefit from the Social Fund. It is
dependent on the benefits you are on, the relationship with
e thirt
the deceased and any other money (not savings) that may
be available to help pay towards the costs. You need to be the
partner of the deceased, the parent of a deceased or still-born
child or a close relative or friend of the deceased where you are
responsible for the funeral costs.
The payment includes necessary burial or cremation fees
and up to £700 for other expenses such as funeral directors
fees, coffin or flowers. The amount has to be paid back from the
deceased’s estate. Further details and an application form are

■ Bereavement Payments
If your husband, wife or partner has died you may be eligible for

■ Bereavement Allowance
When widowed, you may be able to claim this benefit for up to
52 weeks from the death of your partner. You need to be a widow or
widower aged 45 or over but under pensionable age, not bringing
up children, and the deceased must have paid National Insurance
Contributions. The amount you receive is age dependant and ranges
from £27.21 per week if you are aged 45, up to £90.70 per week if
you are between 55 and pensionable age. Further details and an
