SSP is paid for everyday you would normally be working, starting on
the fourth day of illness and lasting for up to a maximum of 28 weeks.
The standard weekly rate of SSP is £75.40. To claim you must tell your

This helps you to take time off work before and after the birth of
your child. You must have been employed continuously by the same
employer for a minimum of 26 weeks, 15 weeks before your baby is due,
and also earning at least £90 a week before tax. If you are not eligible for
SMP then you may be able to claim Maternity Allowance.
SMP is paid for a maximum of 39 weeks and is made up of 90%
of your gross weekly earnings for the first six weeks with no upper
limit and the remaining 33 weeks at 90% of gross weekly earnings up to
a maximum of £117.18. It is normally paid in the same way and time as
your wages and as it is treated as normal pay is subject to
tax and national insurance deductions. To claim, you must tell your
employer at least 28 days before you want to start SMP. Further details

■ statutory Paternity Pay (sPP)
To claim you must be the biological father, the adopter of the child,
the mother’s husband/partner, or have responsibility for the child’s
upbringing. You must also have worked for the same employer for at
least 26 weeks and earn at least £90 per week before tax. SPP is paid at
a rate of £117.18 or 90% of weekly earnings, if this is less, for one or two
consecutive weeks. It is normally paid in the same way and time as your
wages and it is subject to tax and national insurance deductions.
You must tell your employer when you intend to take leave by the 15th
week before the baby is due. Your employer may ask for self-certificate
form SC3 to be completed to confirm you are eligible for the pay. The
