Personally, my philosophy is that well-informed
employees can’t avoid taking responsibility.
Therefore, I support openness in all levels of
our organisation.
Last year’s highlights 2008 was the year
that HDTV took off in the Nordic region. With a
strong portfolio of HD channels, Canal Digital
has driven the introduction of HD in the
region. Our decision to include the HD chan-
nels in our standard packages means we have
increased the availability of HD services for all
our customers, securing critical mass. Another
highlight was the launch of Thor 5 in February,
the first satellite in Telenor’s replacement and
expansion programme. The ongoing digitisa-
tion process supported a strong growth in
Conax, a company that started as an internal
R&I department that now has customers in
more than 70 countries worldwide.
Reflections on the downturn The economic
downturn will have different consequences for
the different parts of the broadcasting value
chain. TV will continue to have a strong posi-
tion and TV consumption will still be high.
Broadcasters will experience a fall in revenues
from commercials, and therefore depend more
on income from pay-TV. As a result of a
tougher financial environment broadcasters
will put investments in multichannel strategies
on hold. The economic downturn can also
affect the tempo of the ongoing digitisation
process, which will affect the entire industry
within transmission and encryption.
