Thank every veteran that you know this year on
November 11, when we observe Veterans Day.
Canyon Country will have one more son to embrace:
Lance Corporal Jeff Phillipps
Offi cially, Veterans Day might be November 11, but
Bob and Rachel Phillipps are already celebrating.
Their 22-year-old son, Lance Corporal Jeff Phillipps
is heading home this month after his fi rst tour of
duty in Iraq. The hardest thing for the Phillipps
family was “not seeing Jeff and missing him every
day for the last seven months. It has been very
diffi cult knowing he has been in a combat zone and
in harms way and our only help for him has been to
pray for his safety on a daily basis,” said Bob.
Jeff could send his parents emails once a week and
call almost as often. He “regularly assured us he
was okay and safe,” said Bob. “He seemed more
worried about us than was focused on his own
predicament.”
As a marine, Jeff serves seven months at a time,
Takke a well-deserved e a well-deserved
with stateside time served at Camp LeJeune in
North Carolina. His service there should seem in

stark contrast to his time overseas. “Most surpris-
ing was the heat, 130 degrees some days, while

email. “Also, how much the Iraqis appreciated hav-

ing the Marines there, helping keep them safe. The
people were generally very hospitable and friendly,
especially the children. Also, it was surprising how
life in Iraq has very much gotten back to normal
… shopping, school, children playing, and people
going about their business.”
Jeff spent most of his life here, graduating from
Santa Clarita Christian School in 2005, then attend-
ing College of the Canyons for three semesters.
Jeff looks forward to a visit to the Phillipps’ home
in Canyon Country later this month. “Most excit-
ing will be seeing my family (parents, brother, and
three sisters),” he wrote. “Also, having some real
food. I have missed so many things and have a list
prepared of my favorite meals. I have also missed
the freedom to relax, having worked every day for
the last seven months without a single day off.”
