P
eriklis Lascaris, an architect by trade, has recently
designed and built a modern holiday villa, perched
high in the olive groves outside Agios Markos. So
special it has been featured in two articles in The Sunday
Times this year (one called 20 Top Villas, the other The
Villas with Something Extra), Bournella is a traditionally
designed stone villa with a difference.
There is a circular stone tower housing the villa’s only
bedroom, a 10ft outdoor cinema screen for al fresco film
viewing, a canopied day bed by the pool, a mini gym and
a Jacuzzi bath set next to the pool (behind glass in cooler
weather). From the two-storey stone building, a wooden
bridge leads to a large decked area, like a luxury tree-house,
where there is a fully equipped kitchen and dining “room”
with the most incredible view towards Ipsos and Corfu town
beyond.
Periklis’s inspiration was drawn from the success of Club
Med in the 50’s, when their “close to nature” approach be-
came so popular. “People want something different when
they’re on holiday – this place allows them to eat, sleep,
bathe and entertain themselves outdoors.” It also seems to
fill a gap in the Corfu villa market; that for couples want-
ing an adults-only, luxury love nest with more than a touch
of glamour. It’s hardly surprising that Bournella was fully
booked last season and is quickly getting booked up for
summer 2009 as well (www.meonvillas.co.uk).
