Chicks and bunnies need special care
“Wild West” fl oat
Desert Cry Wildlife, Inc., a nonprofi t rescue facility for Arizona’s native wild animals,
warns Southern Chandler parents who are thinking about buying a bunny, chick or
duckling for their children for Easter to “think again.”
“These cute little critters grow up fast. They need special care, diet and
housing,” explains Regina Whitman, Desert Cry Wildlife’s founder. “(They)
are not just another toy that can be discarded when the batteries run
down.”
Because they are high maintenance animals, Whitman says
bunnies, chickens and ducklings make less than ideal pets for
families with little ones. In addition, very young children who
don’t understand how frail baby chicks and ducks can be may
harm them by “hugging” and squeezing them too tightly.
