church building on Chandler Boulevard, west of Arizona Avenue. After nearly 95
years in that location, the church is moving to its new home at 450 E. Chandler
Heights Rd., east of Arizona Avenue, in January 2008. The City of Chandler
recently purchased the existing downtown church building and property as part of
downtown redevelopment.
For the holidays, CUMC’s sanctuary is decorated with their traditional Chrismon
Tree.
“’Chrismon’ is a combination of parts of two words: CHRISt and MONogram,”
explains spokesperson Gwen Rusk. “A Chrismon is a monogram of Christ. Chandler
United Methodist Church Chrismons were made in 1962 by a group of women
from the church. Many of those women are still active at CUMC. Most Chrismons
are white with gold decoration of beads, ribbon and other decorations.”
The church is also decorated with poinsettias, which are a part of the Advent and
Christmas tradition at CUMC.
A Christmas Cantata, “Christmas Seekers,” is performed on Sun., Dec. 16 during
the 9 a.m. worship service by the CUMC choir and other church members.
Then, at 3 p.m. Sun., Dec. 16, a performance of a special Christmas play is given
by the children and youth of CUMC.
Special services are held on Christmas Eve, Mon., Dec. 24, with one at 4 p.m.,
and a family service at 7 p.m.
