Carmel gets
its name _MAIN
In April 1837, the t own of Bethlehem, located
north of Indianapolis,was laid out and ageneral _1
store wasbuilt.When apost office w as set up ST
in 1846, residents l earned there already wasa _1
town in Indiana n amed Bethlehem.T he fledgling 0-15-
community had to be renamed.
Apparently,Carmel a tone time wasknown 08
as “Tadpole’sQuarry.” After considering a _NOFOLIO
long list of names, someone suggested
Mount Carmel, abiblical reference.Again,
atown by that name already existed i n
Indiana, so they dropped the “Mount” 1
2_and chose the name Carmel.
BBy avote of 33 to 12, Carmel became _
Athe town’sname. _
