An honour for
town to host
Mod
IT is a tremendous honour for Falkirk to
host the Royal National Mod, the world’s
largest celebration of Gaelic culture and
music.
The Falkirk area already has a strong
link to the Mod and its traditions – in the
18th and 19th centuries, Highland drovers
would bring their livestock to sell, and
while visiting, enjoyed music and
hospitality with local people.
I am delighted to see this tradition
returning ‘home’ in 2008 and I am
confident that the 10,000 expected visitors,
families and competitors from across the
world will enjoy their stay and return
home with memories of Falkirk as a
friendly and enjoyable place.
Our local community will also have the
opportunity to participate and witness
some of the fabulous music, dancing and
cultural events taking place this year as
part of the official Mod Fringe programme.
We hope that the success of the Mod this
year will attract other events to Falkirk, as
well as leaving a lasting Gaelic legacy for
future generations to enjoy.
