DEEPCUT
The Sherman Theatre, Cardiff. Tues 16-Sat 27 Sep
words: NIC ROYLE
I’m sat looking at a small living room with Take That playing somewhere overhead. I know the basics
of the events that took place at the now infamous Deep Cut Barracks but I’m a little thrown by this
and the play’s not even started yet. Soon though, the lights dim and a news broadcast interrupts the
music to inform us that Private Cheryl James has been found dead. An interview with Des James,
her father, then follows, performed from the stage. After the interview he sits on the sofa and starts
telling the audience about his daughter while sipping a cup of tea. It quickly becomes apparent that
this play has no fourth wall, and is more a debate with actors representing the opposing sides of this
continuing dispute.
Obviously this is going to be a biased play, but that of course is necessary to once again spark public
interest in the story and reopen an inquiry before Deepcut barracks are demolished.
I left leaden with a sense of utter disbelief. Why were so many “fuck ups” allowed to occur on behalf
of the M.O.D and Surrey Police? Why were the parents treated so poorly? How is it possible that four
young people, all under the age of 20, lost their lives in the same place in such a short space of time?
These are, of course, questions which demand answers.
