FOOD & DRINK
R
emember Goldilocks and
everything that had to be ‘just
right’? I feel the same way when
I’m left in charge of finding a dinner
venue. Depending on the company and
the occasion, there are always culinary
tastes, the price tag and the ambience
and surroundings to consider. Fortunately
I’ll feel slightly less pressured next time
I’m the decision maker, after a recent
dinner at Iris.
Nestled discreetly in Thistle Street, Iris is
a low-key yet stylish little find boasting a
myriad of dining options, all of which are
refreshingly affordable for its city centre
location. The unassuming entrance and
minimalist signage give way to an on
trend interior of plain wooden tables,
leather stools and banquette seating, set
against a backdrop of silk panelled walls
and low lighting.
The modern European menu impresses
too. There’s a choice of eight dishes for
both starters and mains, offering fresh
seafood, meat and veggie options.
Plump for the seared scallops with
iberico ham, £7.90, or the seven sizzling
king prawns cooked with a delicious
hint of garlic, chilli, and fresh coriander,
£6.90. The steamed meaty mussels in a
rich creamy sauce with basil, bacon and
toasted pine nuts, is a great value starter
at just £4.90.
Mains again have some delectable
combos, without any of the fancy
additions that make you confused about
what you’re ordering. At Iris, simple
works whether it’s a succulent Ribeye
steak garnished with black pepper and
a hint of lemon, £13.90 (opt for a side

a hot date) or the melt in your mouth
