P
aul Hodgkiss combines Scottish, homegrown timbers with intricate metalwork
and glass to create unique and unusual furniture. While some craftsmen look
to architecture or design for their inspiration, Hodgkiss is influenced by nature:
“As a boy I used to go climbing with my father and remember being fascinated by the
changing shape and movement of water and by rock formations. This is where my
inspiration began and nature still influences everything I design.”
Hodgkiss doesn’t just create standard pieces like tables and chairs; he can also
design kitchens and bathroom interiors right through to fireplaces, window seats, and
staircases. Pretty much everything but the kitchen sink. No wait, he does that too – the
most wonderful wooden sink which would probably make washing up sheer pleasure.
Each piece is lovingly handcrafted: “Every piece requires my full attention so it can
take a while to produce a commission,” says Paul. It’s worth the wait.
Even if patience isn’t your strong point, you’re in luck. This month Paul opens his
first showroom, selling ready made pieces: “Each one is still unique though, due
to the nature of wood; it’s impossible for any two pieces to be exactly the same,”
he confirms.
Paul Hodgkiss designs cost from only £20 for kitchen accessories up to around
£40,000 for a kitchen.
