The jumper dress in the window by Danish label d’ahrling, £149,
is a perfect example. A knee length knit in autumnal colours, the
huge black bow at the neckline transforms comfy casual into a
real statement piece. “You could wear it with jeans or it would
work well with thick tights and ballet pumps – that’s the great
thing about the designers here, there’s a real versatility”. Karina
points to a silk smock, £150, in soft greyish lilac with flowing
fabric; it would look perfect teamed with a little cardigan for
work. “The huge pockets bring this classic little dress bang up
to date. And you could totally glam it up with killer heels,” she
suggests. It’s exactly these personal style tips and the owner’s
enthusiasm that make you want to spend time in Kakao.
Newcomer designer House of Lykke’s tailored ruffle trench
coat, £149, puts an imaginative twist on a timeless classic.
With oversized buttons and frills of fabric, it’s the sort of coat
that makes you pray for rain clouds. The Edith and Ella range
with its sultry slant on workwear will have you counting the
days until your next meeting. The fit and flair pencil skirt, £115,
is straight out of The Secretary and oozes 1940s understated
sex appeal.
Karina’s accessory range, a mix of her own jewellery designs
plus leather bags and gloves from Pixie, is a box of treats. The
softest, caramel coloured weekend bags and cute totes in
deliberately clashing red and pink are some of the best I’ve
seen. Even the inside of Edith and Ella’s round-toed shoes
whispers style, with a tiny floral print on the lining.
It’s this spin on the classics and a little injection of ‘va va voom’
that makes Kakao so delicious. New designers, quirky but
unquestionable style and cute accessories, this is one box of
chocolates where ‘you never know what you’re gonna get.’
