EYE ON THE CITY
S
arah David moved to Edinburgh when she was 11.
The Glasgow born owner of Cabaret Voltaire and The
Speakeasy might be fluent in east coast lingo now but
she didn’t find the ‘speak’ so ‘easy’ when she first ventured
east of the M8. “It took time to get used to the colloquialisms
but I fell in love with Edinburgh. In the fiercely competitive
realms of live music, Glasgow has always been viewed as far
more forward-thinking than here so it seemed only right for me
to try and establish Edinburgh firmly on the musical map.”
What gives Edinburgh its edge?
Its ethereal historic beauty coupled with a forward-thinking
approach to life.
Is there anything that would place Edinburgh more
firmly on the map?
More support from Edinburgh City Council and the Scottish
Executive for up-and-coming artists and musicians therefore
highlighting the scene as a whole and establishing Edinburgh
as a cultural centre for the arts.
The city’s downfall
There isn’t enough assistance for local enterprise and small
businesses, especially in the Old Town where footfall was
damaged terribly by the great fire of the Cowgate.
