Martin
Behold a thing of beauty
Words by Bernie Hellberg, Pix © Aston Martin
The history of this illustrious automotive brand is as tumultuous and exciting as
the emotions that the sight of one of the cars elicits. Interestingly, had history
taken a slightly different turn, people may today have known these British
performance sports cars not as Aston Martin, but rather as Bamford Martin.
I
n 1914, the entrepreneurs Robert Bamford and
Lionel Martin joined forces and founded the
company that would go on to be one of the most
enduring classic sports car brands in history. The pair
believed that a sports car, other than other vehicles
produced for more mundane purposes, should have
a distinctive character, should be built to the highest
standards and should be exhilarating to drive and to
own. Although many things have changed over the
ensuing 90-odd years, their goals still remain relevant
today as Aston Martins continue to be hand-built
using high-tech processes in a modern environment.
Bamford and Martin first collaborated to sell
Singer cars, a venture that prepared them for hill
climbing and racing. Martin’s performances with
these cars at the hill climb course in Aston Clinton,
Buckinghamshire provided the inspiration for the now
famous “Aston Martin” name once the pair began
making their own car.
