Forget the cheesy cuckoo clocks, tons of snow and the multi-purpose Swiss
Army Knife; the de facto, race-your-heartbeat reason to trip to Switzerland is
Zurich’s annual Street Parade.
T
his gathering in the name of a good time
certifies that Switzerland is a land of much-
needed, healthy contradictions. Street Parade is
a public party that keeps hot pulses pumping amidst
the snow-covered mountains that remain a tourist
draw-card even during the summer months.
The day-long Street Parade is a mere teenager
on the party circuit. First celebrated during the early
1990s and it covers 2.4 km of party route, which
crosses a few bridges over a picturesque lake and
brings the rest of the town to a halt. Earplugs are
handed to the timid, but no one’s eyes can be
distracted from the absurd costumes that can be
found on some of the partygoers. It is an exhibition of
fetishes, freaks and fantasies.
The Street Parade is not a singular event though,
but rather the highlight of a weekend of frivolities.
Partying begins a few days ahead of the Saturday,
which is reserved for the congregation to meet on
Zurich’s streets and continues a few thereafter.
