These are troubled times for the beaches of the Outer Banks. A controversial consent de-
cree has closed some of the best fishing beaches in Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
The point at Oregon Inlet is an empty beach where in the past familes fished together,
picnicked and just enjoyed time in the sun. The same has happened on Hatteras Island
at the Point, one of the finest beach fishing spots in the world. No one is allowed in the re-
stricted areas--no foot traffic, no vehicles. The closures will ease this fall and winter, but
will return next summer.
