Walking on Water by Liz Strauss SAMPLE PAGES
I once did 700 somersaults in a straight line across my back yard . . .
for no good reason, except good feelings. A fence across that grassy
field would’ve undreamed an endless stream of childhood somersaults.
Setting somersault records is more fun than fences.
Fences make it hard to run.
From your side of the fence, what I’m doing might look heroic, but
from where I’m standing, it’s the only thing I have going. Fences have
a way of dividing our perspective into greener and not so green grass.
Not all fences are useless.
Some fences provide privacy or protection from a real threat.
I know that.
I also know that most fences – visible or invisible– don’t do that.
Draw a fence around your heart, and people will stay out.
