Walking on Water by Liz Strauss SAMPLE PAGES
Fences
“Fences make good neighbors,” they say.
I say, “Keep me away from that neighborhood please.”
Fences say, “This is mine and not yours.”
I don’t like things that separate. I like things that connect.
If I need to draw lines where things begin and end.
I’d rather be somewhere else.
When a fence is open for me, I know that it can be closed for someone.
It could be closed for me the next time.
No, I don’t like fences. I’m sure I didn’t like playpens either.
Fences are meant to keep something out
Or to keep something in.
