Q & A 57
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF
I’m Logan D from Forest Gate in East London. I got into jungle in 1995 when I first
listened to pirate radio stations with a neighbour. The music was new to me, and
I loved the sound. That inspired me to get behind the turntables in control and
selecting the tunes!
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?
I have been DJing for nine years and my taste in D&B has varied dramatically over
the years, from soulful liquid tracks in one era, then hard hitting Technical Itch and
Dylan material in the next era. Right now my sound is definitely jump-up!
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
I’m working on a new show with Drum & Bass Arena, which will broadcast every
Wednesday from 10pm until midnight on D&BTV (www.breakbeat.co.uk). You
can catch MC Eksman every two weeks on the show plus special guests such as
Original Sin, Taxman, Jaydan, Fatman D, Foxy, Herbzie, Evil B and Shabba.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE COMING OUT SOON?
I’m the owner of Low Down Deep Recordings and in May we’re releasing our ninth
single, ‘Twilight Zone’ / ‘You Got The Nerve’ by DJ Sly from the Shadow Demon
Coalition. Also out soon is Zen’s ‘Jah Colours’ remix.
WHAT ARE YOUR AMBITIONS?
My short-term ambition is to keep focused in what I am doing at the moment -
keep working hard and hopefully it will pay off in the long run. My night Low Down
Deep has just secured a residency at Bar Rumba in London every two months so
the main thing at the moment is to make sure that lifts off to a flying start. During
the daytime I’m an electrician on a building site so I would like to retire from the
sites, that is my long-term ambition!

LOGAN D
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF
I’m Zyon Base from Manchester but I’ve been based in Belfast for the last four
years. I was always in bands, but found electronic production to be much more
interesting, especially the sampling side of things. I took up DJing as soon as I
could afford a set of decks.
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR MUSIC?
Inspiration is a hard thing to really understand. I tend to do my best work when I
haven’t been producing for a while, so I guess things in day-to-day life would be my
main inspiration. I find being cooped up at the PC or around D&B for too long ruins my
creative flow.
WHAT PROCESS DO YOU GO THROUGH IN CREATING A TRACK?
I tend to start a tune around a particular sample that defines the mood of the
track. Then it’s a case of finding the right elements to compliment that original
source. I’d hate for this to become my ‘method’ though, and try to challenge myself
to work differently.
WHICH ARTISTS INFLUENCE YOUR WORK?
From a production standpoint, anyone who uses interesting and different sample
sources to breathe fresh air into their particular genre of music. RZA and J Dilla
jump immediately to mind. Musically, anyone from Tom Waits to Aphex Twin and
anything in between.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
I have a few tracks with Hobzee on the go, as well as some solo stuff and downtempo
/ hip-hop things to keep me interested. I’ve always lots on at any one time.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE COMING OUT SOON?
Released recently have been ‘The Wire’ on Lucky Devil, ‘Simple Man’ on SGN:LTD,
‘Tombstone Blues’ / ‘City Of The Red Night’ on Deep Soul Music. Coming soon I have a
couple of tracks (‘Troubled Times’ and ‘World of Emptiness’ with Sol ID) on the Fokuz
Chronicles Aftermath project which will be a CD / MP3 release. Finally, I have a collab
with Hobzee entitled ‘Red Letter’ coming out on Diverse Products, which is a flip to
Hobzee’s ‘Don’t Go’.
