56 Q & A
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF
My name is Kjell Anderson, and I lived in Richmond, Virginia pretty much all
my life until recently when my girl and I moved up to Brooklyn, NY. I’m part
of the Style Control production team with Will Miles and Ill Omen and have
been DJing and producing drum & bass music for about ten years. I’ve been
a student of D&B ever since hearing ‘Original Nuttah’ back in ‘94, and cut
my chops DJing in Richmond as part of the NUCO and Camp Zero families
that threw weeklies from ‘99-‘04.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?
My sound is sample-based and musical, with heavy jazz, hip-hop, early
jungle and dub influences. In any given track there will be way more of an
accent on melody and sample usage than futuristic-sounding basslines,
sound effects or atmospheres.
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR MUSIC?
Many things such as hearing new music that I like, rediscovering old music,
good and loud drum & bass at the club, walking around the city, everyday
life, bourbon and gingers.
WHAT PROCESS DO YOU GO THROUGH IN CREATING A TRACK?
Go to the used records and CD store, buy a ton of music, get a gang of
samples, put some drums together and see what works. A lot of times I
start out trying to make a certain type of track and it ends up being the
exact opposite. It just takes a lot of listening and messing around with
different ideas.
WHICH ARTISTS INFLUENCE YOUR WORK?
This could take a while. I won’t name all my favourite jazz or hip-hop
artists but just as far as D&B goes, I’d say Will Miles, Saburuko, Calibre,
Paradox, Seba, Naibu, Random Movement, Digital, Intalex, A-Sides,
Resound, Lynx, Perpetuum, Polar, Commix... the list goes on and on. Way
too many producers making great D&B nowadays.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
Haven’t had a lot of time lately to work on tunes because of my recent
move, but I am starting a collaboration with Khalid who’s an MC/poet from
DC. Also recently finished remixes for Naibu and Perpetuum that will be
coming on Creative Source and Colours Audio, respectively.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE COMING OUT SOON?
Along with the aforementioned remixes, there’s ‘Dunnshine’ / ‘Empty
Wallets’ on Creative Source, ‘Wind Tunnel’/ ‘Calmante” on Influence and ‘The
KJELL
Dynamic’ which will be a split 12” on Timeless with ‘Distance’ by Digital,
Outrage & Aperture.
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF
I’m Sense, a man of many names (very few of which are suitable to print in a magazine).
I’m from London and am currently residing on the sunny Costa Del Tol(worth). It’s lovely,
as you can imagine. I’m the man behind the infamous Grass Roots Family and I’m proudly
sponsored by the mighty THTC (www.thtc.co.uk). I have also recently signed to Drum & Bass
Arena’s management team which is cool, and it’s working out nicely:

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?
I’m the man of words. Simple as. So now I aim to raise the bar lyrically every time I rhyme.
For everybody. Period. I don’t care how fast you can talk or how many guns you’ve got. All
I’m dealing with is words. People say I’m hip hop or whatever but really I came from a jungle
background like everyone else. I find both styles interchangeable and compatible. A few years
ago I made a conscious decision to try and be myself, stop putting on ridiculous accents and
avoid the machine-gun style, nonsensical rhyming that everyone seemed to be doing. Myself
included. Now I’m elevating the artform and that’s that.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE COMING OUT SOON?
Well, I’m a lucky boy, so I’ve got tracks forthcoming on Zero T’s album on CIA, and Lynx & Kemo’s
album on Soul:R for starters. Also my hip hop crew, Grass Roots Family, are finally releasing
our album. It’s all done and we’re just trying to work out the best route to release it. Check out
the promo videos and live clips on YouTube (just search for MC Sense). There probably won’t be
a ‘Sense’ solo project until the end of the year because I’m really trying to concentrate on drum
& bass for the moment.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
I have got bundles of collabs in the pipeline. The list is silly!! Me, Zero T and Alix Perez are
working on bringing our own brand of ‘terrorist funk’ to the masses. I’ll leave it to you to
work out who brings what to the party! As well as all this I’m currently working with a whole
heap of artists across the board including Stamina MC, Fatman D, Format and Kombo,
Rhymes, Stealthy and Jackson, Deeizm and loads more. I’m working with old school vet
Billy Whizz on a D&B side project called Dubious State so it’s good to get in the studio and
make beats again. MC SENSE
