As we rapidly approach the big 100, our 99th issue shows exactly why there’s never a dull minute in
drum & bass. Pendulum, the Oz trio who picked d&b up by the scruff of the neck in 2003 and have
been attracting acclaim and aggro ever since, swing by for a characteristically frank and amusing
interview as they prepare to launch new album ‘In Silico’ and tour the globe once more.
Sometimes, you just have to take your hat off. When I hear talk of the so-called “Pendulum
backlash”, it makes me chuckle at how short people’s memories can be. Rewind to 2003, and even
the most hard-nosed purists were dancing like giddy schoolchildren as ‘Vault’ lashed around club
soundsystems like fresh napalm. Coming as it did during a rather barren time for drum & bass,
Pendulum almost singlehandedly reminded everyone of the limitless possibilities that our music
held. And for that alone, you and I owe them a pint or 12.
Drum & bass and jungle has always ruffled feathers, both inside and outside the scene - music
which inspires passion and devotion always will. But as much as a sense of family and identity has
always been central to our enjoyment, nobody owns beat structures and BPMs. If talented musicians
have used a jungle-shaped brush to paint a new picture, rocking Radio 1 playlists and shifting
thousands of units in the process, then good luck to them. Love them or loathe them, Pendulum are
pure entertainment.
May and June are always busy months for big albums in drum & bass and in this issue we
also speak to Calibre, D-Bridge, Phantasy & Digital and DNAudio about their long players. DJ
Fresh’s Soundweapon project and DJ Yoda’s Magic Cinema show both see the two respected DJs
incorporating video mixing into their sets with Pioneer’s new mixer. This is something you’ll be
seeing a lot more of in future so we decided to taker a closer look
Don’t forget to get online at www.kmag.co.uk and take part in our poll to find the top 100 singles
of all time. The results will be published in next month’s momentous issue. It’s going be one to
remember! And if you’re in London on Thursday June 12th come along to our official 100th issue
celebration at Movement @ Bar Rumba. The line-up features Xample, DJ Shortee, Davide Carbone,
Macpherson, Fatman D & Lady MC and it promises to be a cracker.
