Division I Programs Shoot for Regionals
After a long winter’s rest the central Virginia Division I golf programs are ready to break out the sticks and aim towards an invitation to
regionals in early May. Several of the programs enjoyed fine fall seasons and learned who might step up and lead their respective teams.
The University of Richmond played in four fall events and finished second twice. The Spiders added a tie for fifth and a 7th at their other two
events. One of their runner-up finishes occurred at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational where sophomore Hunter Townsend of Glen Allen shot
75-66-68 to take home the individual crown. In the very next tournament Jordan Utley, a senior from Richmond, captured the individual title at
the Seascape Invitational. The Spiders didn’t fare as well here as they finished tied for fifth. Their other second place finish occurred at the Frank
Landrey Intercollegiate in Amherst.
Having two individual winners in one season was a first for Richmond Head Coach Adam Decker. “It’s pretty exciting when your number four
man wins a tournament,” said Decker, “It says a lot about the team’s depth.” Richmond starts the spring season Feb. 24 at Kiawah Island.
Virginia Commonwealth University struggled to find consistency in their fall tournament season. Vincent Nadeau of Penn Hook led the way
with a 72.53 stroke average. Nadeau, like Townsend and Utley, also captured an individual title when he shot 69-71-66 at the Frank Landrey
Intercollegiate to help the Rams to their best fall finish, a third place showing. VCU added a 7th, 9th, 11th, and tie for 12th in their other starts.
“We definitely underachieved,” said VCU Head Coach Matt Ball. “We’re motivated and excited for the spring season as this is one of my most
talented teams ever.” VCU heads south to Tampa to start their spring schedule February 29th.
