POOL & BEACH SAFETY
LA SALUD Y LA SEGURIDAD
As the summer approaches it is important to plan ahead to
ensure the safety of yourself and your family. Water is fun

It can take as little as 60 seconds for a child to drown. Chances
are you won´t hear a cry or a splash, just silence. Pay attention to Los teléfonos de emergencia son 091 para llamar a una ambulancia

teléfono cerca en la piscina.
At the beach, if the weather is windy and there are waves coming
onto the beach or you see someone struggling to get into shore,
keep your children out of the water.
Inflatables get dragged out to sea in an instant. Only allow
children on them if you have hold of the inflatable and the sea
is calm and knee high (which means your child can stand up in
it). Ensure you maintain visual contact with children and adults
in the sea.
During the pool season, stay with your child in the water and
maintain a visual contact. Follow the safety guidelines on display
near the pool i.e. no diving, no running, no inflatables (they hide
a child in distress) etc. No sit-on toys should be near the pool
area. Ensure children wear suitable flotation aids that cannot
be removed by them or their siblings. Floats integrated into the
swim suit are ideal. There is no need for a nappy to be worn
as children´s swimwear caters for accidents. Disposable nappies
filled with water weigh as much as a concrete block.
When it’s too cold to swim keep all doors leading to the pool
locked at night. Drain any standing water from safety pool
covers. Keep chairs and other items children can climb onto
away from pool fences and gates.
ACCIDENTS HAPPEN, BE PREPARED & PREVENT
THEM
• Fence and cover your pool and encourage your community
to fence open pools.
• Ensure your children have swimming lessons to learn to
swim and increase their awareness of pool safety. Learn to swim
yourself if you can´t already do so.
• Take a 1st Aid Course and renew the certificate every 3
years. Everyone benefits from knowing which is now 30 to 2
and differs in technique and procedure for children.
Know the emergency telephone numbers 091 for an ambulance
and 112 for all emergency services. Keep a phone near the pool
when in use.
1st for Schools would like to thank Liane Kavanah-Davies, Life
Coach and Director of 1st Aid Spain, for this important advice.
