Tiata Fahodzi: Waxing strong at 10 years
T
iata Fahodzi, a national
touring theatre company
focusing on producing
excellent new writing and
supporting writers, celebrated a
decade of existence recently.
Tiata Fahodzi which translates as
‘‘theatre of the emancipated” was
formed in 1997 by its current Artistic
Director, Femi Elufowoju, Jr.
Elufowoju who was born in
London to Nigerian parents, originally
trained as a solicitor before turning to
dramatic arts. He worked as an actor
for six years and later trained as a
Regional Theatre Young Director in
1996 at Theatre Royal Stratford,
before forming the company with the
sole aim of addressing the under-
representation of African theatre in the
UK in the 90s.
Tiata Fahodzi produces new work
that constantly explores the richness
and heritage of theatre sourced from
people living within British African
communities. Its work is aimed at an
all-inclusive British audience.
