and just who was he spending the nights with anyway? and
then four nights out of the house became five nights and five
full days. The remaining two nights and two days were dis-
tributed evenly between time at home – just enough to write
a minimally eloquent sermon – and time at lilburn baptist
church, conducting the clergy meetings and the four weekly
services (five during Advent season).
She had briefly considered leaving, two or three times
when it first began, but she did not get far. She clung to the
only piece of him she owned: the expression on his face when
he asked her to marry him. For that one moment, he beheld
her – not god, not sin, not power, not temptation – only her.
she had seen it just once, but in the tear-streaked moments
when she nearly reached for the suitcase, it was the only im-
age she could conjure.
on a Wednesday afternoon a week and a half ago, he paid
an unexpected visit to the house so that he could lock garrett
in his room. he said he would not let him out until he had
fully reconsidered god’s plan for his life.
at three on Friday morning, garrett tried to get to the
kitchen to make himself a turkey sandwich after two full days
of near starvation brought on by enforced spiritual search-
ing. his father sat asleep by his door, guarding it as though
he suspected garrett might escape at any moment. With the
accidental creak of a floorboard, he awoke immediately and
clamped his sweaty hand around his son’s delicate forearm.
he asked if he had changed his mind, and garrett said he was
just hungry, that’s all. but he had to know if he had changed
his mind; had god healed him during his time of solitude?
he began to slowly twist the skin on his son’s arm. garrett
screamed.
