CLASSES & SPECIAL I
Meet a Few of Our Instructors
Sue Li: Suju “Sue” Li moved to the United States from China about 20 years ago. She received her bachelor’s degree as
a Chinese Language teacher in China and she has taught in both China and America, however, cooking is her passion. While
attending classes at Purdue University, Sue would prepare meals at the University for over 2,000 guests daily. She can prepare
over one hundred different Chinese dishes including seafood, meat, egg roll, soup and vegetarian. “I normally cook four to six
dishes for dinner everyday for my family. My family’s happiness and health are the most important things in my life.” To register
for Sue’s Chinese cooking classes, see page 66.
Dorcas Paterson: Dorcas recently moved to Michigan from the UK and has a Bachelors Degree in Sociology and Social
Policy. She worked as an Office Manager for 12 years, while raising two children. Dorcas has 5 years combined experience
of teaching pre-school age children in both church and day-care settings, preparing her to teach Jolly Phonics, a UK phonics
program. This curriculum combines sounds with actions engaging the sensory skills. It is fun and easy for children; however it is
stress-free for parents. Dorcas loves teaching children to read using this method. She enjoys seeing the pleasure that children
have as they realize they can do it. To experience Jolly Phonics, please see page 62.

Emily Sherman: One irritated boy remarked while being cautioned on a precarious stairway during last season’s produc-
tion of Aladdin Junior, that, “Ah, Emily, you take away all the fun.” But another boy quickly disagreed, “No, Emily MAKES the
fun.” It was a surprising yet joyful statement to Emily Sherman, Owner, Producer and Director for Ever After Productions. “Fun
NTEREST
is certainly a goal,” believes Sherman. Ever After Productions’ shows have been nothing short of astonishing, striving for a level
of depth and richness rarely seen in community theater. “At the end of the day, we’re really about building people, not mounting
shows. The shows are a vehicle for teaching work-ethic, team-work, and respect, ” said Sherman. “Every show we do is a new
challenge and our audiences are leaving with their mouths open. It’s an incredible feeling.” Emily grew up and currently lives
in Canton. Her earliest memory of theater is seeing Peter Pan in the early 80’s. She was encouraged to continue in theater
in college, but chose to enroll in Arts Management at EMU instead. Emily landed an internship with The Plymouth Community
Arts Council and was offered her first job. “I knew from the very beginning that I wanted to do this for as long as I could. It was
amazing.” Emily was asked to form a youth theater group for Canton’s new Village Theater, where she jumped at the chance,
and the rest is history. To see Emily in action, please refer to page 31.
Rosa I . Valles (Rosy): Rosy was born and raised in Sonora Mexico, an historic and prosperous state in Northern Mexico.
She attended the Hermosillo Tech where she received her bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. 8 years ago, Rosy
moved to the United States with her family, and has been a Canton resident ever since. Having a special passion for the arts,
she studied the art of Metal Embossing in Mexico City and Queretaro, Mexico for several years. Metal Embossing is an ancient
art technique which uses specialized tools to work silver, other metals and stains into wonderful works of art. She also studied
formal courses in Floral Design, Scrapbooking, Mexican Crafts and Painting. This multi-talented instructor will also share with
you her secrets of making delicious authentic Mexican salsa. To find out how you can sign up for “Make Your Own Salsa,” see
page 66. To learn more about Rosy’s embossing classes, see page 34.
