Catholic colleges and universities come from a rich and profound tradition that
emphasizes the role of learning in its relationship to the discovery of God. As such, they
often strive to be the locus of the discovery of God through learning and the locus where
the Church can do its thinking and engage its own and other religious traditions. It is a
tradition that values the sacredness of all creation, emphasizes the moral and intellectu-
al qualities of learning, pursues academic and moral excellence, and is committed to the
gospel values of service, stewardship for the common good and the "preferential option
for the poor."
Villanova University, along with other Catholic institutions of higher educa-
tion, has evolved from its historic roots into the twenty-first century with a sense of hav-
ing developed significantly as an institution of educational excellence, while trying to rec-
