California, the shortage so great, some court interpreters find work
without it. Sometimes, in certain cases, courts will use provisionally
qualified interpreters (non-certified, non-registered) especially for
things like arraignments, preliminary hearings and pretrial confer-
ences. Some overburdened courts like Fresno Superior Court are
even making limited use of volunteer interpreters who can assist
under qualified supervision in certain non-critical instances. This
can be a good way to explore interpreting as a career while being
mentored by a Certified Court Interpreter.
Generally, it is the Superior Court of each county which over-
sees all the courts of that county and they are the actual employer
setting the hiring requirements, salaries and benefits.
The requirements in the Federal court system are more rigor-
ous. Federal court certification is granted by the Administrative
Office of the U.S. Courts through its federal court interpreter exam-
ination. Go to www.uscourts.gov and click on "U.S. District
