In 2002, “The George Lopez Show” premiered and brought
Constance even more success. A surprise hit, the show resonated
with viewers of all backgrounds. Loosely based on the life of
standup comedian George Lopez, the show depicts contemporary
American family life from a bicultural perspec-
tive. Constance’s character Angie and her
husband live with George’s tough-loving
mom while raising their 15-year-old daugh-
ter and 9-year-old son, whose daily
concerns range from learning to
drive to reading with dyslexia.
One of the show’s most powerful
symbols is the family’s modern
kitchen. The message: This is a
middle-class family living in the
suburbs. The “Latin-ness” of the
family was not ignored, but it was
not overly emphasized either. For
network television that was a huge
step forward. Without relying on
stereotypes or ethnocentric humor,
the show helped to broaden the per-
ception of Latinos to the American audience in the same way that
“The Cosby Show” did in the 1980’s.
Regarding the show
Constance has said, “It’s
a warm, loving family
representation. It has all
the balls in the air and
it’s funny.” She also
says, “One of the things
that I think is great about
humor is that while you
have people laughing and
they have their guard
down, you can also
explore really poignant
things and truth.”
Constance received several nominations and awards for her
portrayals, particularly from the Latino community. In 2004, she
was nominated for the Imagen Award for "Best Actress in a
Television Drama" for her performance in “American Family.” That
year she was also nominated for the Imagen Award for "Best
Actress in a Comedy Series" for her performance on “The George
Lopez Show,” which she won. In 2005 and 2007, she was also
nominated again for the show.
Like many successful actors in Hollywood, Constance began to
get various offers to branch out into merchandising, licensing her
name to various products. This was not something that initially
appealed to her and she was very cautious about lending her name
to a product. But last fall, Constance proudly launched her new
clothing line, the Constance Marie Collection exclusive to Mervyns
Stores. At first she was not sure about the idea, but she got excited
