The unit sends the images and sounds wirelessly to an analysis center where trained analysts review and assign each incident a risk score. Parents then log into the Website (www.teensafedriver.com) to view the driving report card, the video events and coaching tips, including objective third-party assessment of their teen driver’s driving performance compared with other teens. The Teen Safe Driver program also sends a weekly email update reminding parents to log in or out as needed.
The flow of information does not go through American Family. We do not want to know how individuals are doing in the program. We just want the families to use the program and to be comfortable that their results are kept confidential.
Let’s talk about the recording device itself. A small device is installed by a technician, sitting behind the rear-view mirror. Its component parts are two cameras – an audio recorder, a motion sensor and a cellular-technology based transmitter. It captures video from events in the roadway ahead and video and audio from the driver’s seat and passenger area. The device is activated by forward and lateral gravitational forces -- for example, sudden stops, quick accelerations or swerves. If the sensor picks up a force outside of the set of parameters, it triggers the capture of the previous eight seconds of audio and video, along with the following four seconds of audio of video. In the end, the parents have a short video clip showing not only what happened but why and how it happened. The device only captures sights and sounds of a risky driving behavior and it does not retain unrelated sights and sounds of the driver or vehicle occupants.
While the device continually records data, whether any of that data is transmitted back to DriveCam is by and large within the control of the young driver. No sudden movements: no data. Parents cannot tap into the camera and view their teens in their vehicles at any time, although Page 1  |  Page 2  |  Page 3  |  Page 4  |  Page 5  |  Page 6  |  Page 7  |  Page 8  |  Page 9  |  Page 10  |  Page 11
