Werner Paddles pilfered
In mid-May Werner Paddles released a statement
that uc Sports, a chinese manufacturer of low-cost
paddles and surf gear, had stolen intellectual prop-
erty. Werner President Bruce furrer says he was
alerted to the uc Sports website which was tem-
plated the same as Werner’s, including Werner’s
stock photography, Werner’s exact mission state-
ment and even the same paddle model names. fur-

but after Werner contacted uc Sports the website
was changed and the offending products and im-
ages were removed.
No fear, there’s a drug for that
Scientists at the university Medical centre of ham-
burg-eppendorf, germany, have taken a step to-
ward creating the perfect paddling superman with
their ongoing study into fear response. Research-
ers say they have found a drug that may help block
the body’s natural fear responses and suspect it
could have great impact for those with serious dis-
orders like exaggerated fears of heights or water.
for marketing purposes the drug is being called
naloxone, but Velocitious Bedamndious will be its
scientific moniker. Over here we’ve had our own
fear-numbing drug for quite some time. for mar-
keting purposes it is called beer.
all Day Jay retires
“All Day” Jay Kincaid, a multi-time uS national free-
style champion and 2003 World freestyle Kayak
champion is bowing out of competitive paddling,
announcing his retirement prior to his home town’s
annual Reno River festival in nevada this past May.
Kincaid still plans to have four fingers and a thumb
on the pulse of world rankings, taking up a position
with glacier glove, a Reno-based manufacturer of
specialty gloves for outdoor sports and the military.
Because rocks hurt auction
Argentinean pianist and conductor Daniel Barenbo-
im said, “every great work of art has two faces, one
toward its own time and one toward the future.” A
third, far more literal happy and safe face should be
added as the Shred Ready foundation and Ameri-
can Whitewater have joined forces for Because
Rocks hurt. This new project is a touring and online
art show of about 30 whitewater paddling helmets
painted and decorated in a myriad of media. The
