“Without ERDF this initiative will not happen. It is
key to providing the building blocks to support South
Yorkshire’s economic regeneration.”
Digital Region would serve more than 1.3 million
residents, including 40,000 businesses in the
county. The project is supported by Objective 1 and
Yorkshire Forward.
So why is European funding coming to regions
such as Yorkshire and Humber? Holmes
explains: “The European Commission
supports regional development through
its cohesion policy. This seeks to
reduce the gap between the levels
of development and economic
performance between countries
and regions. All regions are
confronted with the need to
restructure, modernise and
foster continuous knowledge-
based innovation to meet the
challenge of globalisation.
So the funds help boost
competitiveness.”
As we move into the next
decade, ERDF money will
be an important factor in
helping the region compete
regionally, nationally and
internationally.
