tetley’s bitter fans can be assured their
pints will forever flow smoothly after
a £3.8 million groundbreaking project
to link up to 100 yorkshire and humber
farmers with the malting barley industry.
Three farming co-operatives have come
together with uk malt manufacturer
Muntons to build a 24,000-tonne, energy-
smooth
efficient cleaning, drying and storage
facility at Bridlington.
The aim is to boost the amount of
operators.
malting barley grown in the uk, worth

of sectors including local food and drink,
visitor services, creative industries and
those adding value to primary agricultural
products.
Operating as a new company, Muntons
Malt Supply Chain (MMSC) has devised
unique contracts between itself, farmers,
Muntons’ distiller and brewer customers
such as Carlsberg. The collaboration will
ensure continuity of supply and demand.
MMSC director Guy newsam says:
“This is the first such collaboration
between farmers, manufacturers,
brewers and distillers. Due to two poor
harvests and increased competition from
other crops, malting barley has been in
short supply recently. This development
encourages farmers to grow malting
barley by assuring them of a guaranteed
premium over wheat, while guaranteeing
our customers high quality barley.”
