Obamamania
T
he global economy is going through one of the most severe adjustments the world
has ever seen. The impact is being felt in every industry and at every level. A
number of international efforts have been put into place to try and stimulate the
deflating balloon of capitalism with a strong message aimed at preventing protectionist
behaviour that was the major cause of the world’s greatest depression. It will be as a result of
such stimulus packages that industries such as PV manufacturing will benefit from most. PV will
benefit from investments already made before the credit crunch slowed the creaky wheels of
the global economy as well as the current push for alternative energy sources from the usual
oil and gas based supplies.
Nowhere will this input be felt stronger than in the USA where newly elected President Barack Obama has
announced an almost US$ 1 Trillion stimulus package for the USA. Although only a percentage of this will
go towards new energy technologies, the resulting amount still dwarfs other global investments in this
area. Despite the warnings that the entire global economy will be impacted by protectionist behaviours it
would appear that some companies in the USA have not understood that their economy is so tied into
global activities that you cannot seperate one from the other. Some companies are so excited with finally
having a strong leader that they are taking everything he says too literally and are falling over themselves
to ensure as much money as possible comes to the industry from the stimulus package. More
concerning are those companies that are actively trying to recruit international companies to set up in the
USA to help bolster their own chances of receiving as much of the pie as possible without looking at the

broader global needs.

capacity of the entire industry will only result in a disjointed growth that will slow down the global ability to
absorb new product and thus reduce the potential capacity of the industry that they were trying to
