This issue, starting on page 20, Jack Samuels offers
his reflections on Expo Zaragoza, the “World’s Fair” that finished
last month in the Spanish city of the same name.
If, like me, you’ve always been a bit confused as to how often an Expo
should occur, then Jack can explain. Special Class exhibitions, such as the
event in Zaragoza, are limited in size and scope, and take place in between the
larger Universal Class Expos, which are held every five years, the next
scheduled for Shanghai in 2010.
Such events can, at least in terms of visitor numbers, be hugely successful.
The last Universal Class Expo, in Aichi, Japan, drew 22 million guests during its
six month run in 2005.
World’s Fairs, or the contents of them, can also be very influential. Walt
Disney’s contributions to the 1964/5 New York World’s Fair provided several
new theme park technologies, plus the classic Disneyland attraction It’s a Small
World. More recently a number of design and technology firms working in the
leisure sector have also gone on to offer pioneering work of their own at
various Expo events around the world.
When the Expo 2010 takes place in Shanghai we can expect many more
eye-opening achievements, not least because China’s “second city” will be
keen to provide some memorable moments of its own after the those
spectacular Olympic opening/closing ceremonies recently in Beijing. But there’s
one really amazing thing about this Expo that already promises to blow all
others out of the water, and that’s the estimated attendance: 70 million
...in six
months! Will they get it? I wouldn’t bet against it.
