there. “You can pull in and visit friends or
neighbors on your boat or just ride to a restaurant and eat dinner,” he says. Peter Moore, a longtime resident of
Lake Murray, advises those interested in moving to the lake to buy while prices are low. “That way, you will be able to afford
a bigger boat,” he explains. Moore and his wife are raising their
2-year-old daughter on the lake. “We can hardly keep her out of her
bathing suit,” he says. “Everything is an adventure for her, from feeding the fish to going for a boat ride to swimming.”
Lake Lure, North Carolina Lake Lure is maintained and man-
aged by the town of the same name in the North Carolina mountains. The lake serves primarily as a recreational facility but is a secondary source of electricity. Thousands of visitors descend on
Lake Lure, NC
Lake Lure every year from around the country, Canada and abroad. Located east of Asheville in the heart of Hickory Nut Gorge, the lake covers 13.25 square miles and includes a large body of deep water, three long bays, a seven-acre island and many small bays and inlets against a verdant background of densely forested hills and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Lake Lure offers a front-beach area for sun-

bathers and swimmers, and boat tours offer glimpses of the location where the 1987 movie “Dirty Dancing” was shot. There are two championship golf courses in the area. Lake Lure was a dream of Dr.
Lucius B. Morse, who wanted to develop a resort community in western North Carolina. He started by purchasing 400 acres near Chimney Rock in 1902 and establishing
Chimney Rock Park. Over the next several years, more land was acquired, bringing the total to 8,000 acres. It was also Morse’s idea to create a lake by building a dam, and his vision became reality in September 1926. Lake Lure’s weather is a major draw. “During our summers, it is rela-
tively cool because of our location and, during the winter, you don’t have to worry much about snow and ice,” explains five-term Mayor Jim Proctor. “Our lake is easily one of the prettiest mountain lakes in the world.” Lakeside living is almost like being
on a permanent vacation. The fun of boating, swimming and fishing is always a possibility when you are just steps away from the water. Or you can simply relax on a deck or balcony and drink in the beautiful water views. “It is really restful living on the
lake,” says Shirer. “Every morning when I wake up, I see more water than land. God made water beautiful, even in a storm.”
