INNER BEAUTY F Faux Chic

ROM GOLD-FRESCO ceilings to Venetian plaster, master artist Susan Miller is well-versed in the artistry of faux finishing,

trompe l’oeil, murals, hand-glazing and cabinetry finishes.

BY ANNE FELDMAN Miller, owner of Hilton Head

Island-based Faux Chic design studio, trained extensively at decorative art schools and under award-winning French master craftsman Michel Nadai. Today, she works with her dedicated crew to provide high-qual- ity decorative finishes to walls, ceilings and cabinetry, taking the ordinary to the extraordinary. Originally from Nottingham,

England, Miller’s passion for faux finishing and interior design has firmly established Faux Chic’s reputa- tion for superior artistry. For example, the Cat Island home of John and Joanne Davenport features golden fresco ceilings in the central hallway, executed above hand-stenciled cream and golden bronze damask walls. “We added wrought-iron double doors and paneling for a feeling of grandeur. In the living room, hand-troweled shimmer stone plaster adds warmth and dimension, with distressed glaze on cabinetry and fireplace surround. Italian plaster in the kitchen brings an aged look and texture with glazed ceilings and an antique English fireback embedded in handpicked stone surround – four barrels of stones, I might add,” Miller explains. Highly praised by appreciative clients for “her spectacular work, completed on time and within bud- get,” Susan does everything from faux painting to flooring to wall covering to steel beam placement to lighting

and interior design. “She proved herself

a creative visionary who we came to rely upon, resolving difficult problems in a way that enhanced the beauty of our residence,” says John Davenport. One of Susan’s beauti- fully hand-painted mu- rals, commissioned for a Boca Raton, Florida, residence, features an original Tuscany land- scape. “We have no limits to the imagination,” she says, adding, “Recently, I brought in Michel Nadai for a one-of-a-kind trompe l’oeil, painted on canvas and applied to the ceiling of a Broad Pointe home.” Miller can accom- modate such large-scale projects, working from her Beach City Road studio. Smaller, intimate projects also are welcome, such as elegant powder rooms with classic faux finish. In the kitchen, faux finishes greatly en- hance with hand-rubbed glazes and decorative finishes. Faux Chic also offers painting, staining and interior design.
