Kayak Angler in Iraq Kentucky, unbridled fishing
So I am out shopping for a new boat and I fell in love with the Native Watercraſt Ultimate 12. So I go tonight to sit in it and “really” look her over, ‘cause I don’t want to make a mis- take on this purchase. See, my buddies and I are AVID and I mean AVID kayak fishing nuts! So I have to take this stack of magazines out of the boat to get in and check out the seat, and in the boat is the Spring 2008 Kayak Angler. I am hooked now. My subscription will be filled out aſter this email! My buddy Paul and I have been fishing this river, and region, since the late ‘80s from the
banks, and on foot, and recently we have discovered places that we can get in our nimble and trusty kayaks. And boy has it been paying off, BIG TIME! When the water is running between 14 and 16 feet the GAME IS ON! We went Sunday June 1 to the very spot you wrote about in the number 18 spot [“25 Best Aſter-Work Kayak Fishing Spots,” Spring 2008], and we landed eight species of fish! I even landed a gar, and caught a catfish on a rattletrap! In all we caught over 50 fish each, and we were only driver, three wood and pitching wedge from downtown Louisville! If you guys are interested in some awesome fishing, you are more than welcome to give
it a go on the Ohio as our guest. We have extra boats and can assist with all of the logistics once you arrive. Tanks for an awesome magazine!

Modeling responsible behavior
Tere were photos on your website that caught my eye. Seems to me you’d want to promote safety a bit more by showing your paddlers wearing life jackets. Not wearing a life jacket is a very serious error in colder waters. Granted in warmer bodies it’s not as serious if you are an adequate swimmer. Photos of kayakers should be shown in the
most responsible settings and that setting is wearing a life jacket. I’ve seen photos of guys several hundred yards from shore wearing hip waders with no PFD in a fishing kayak. Sure, maybe the water’s only three feet deep, but the lasting impression is that you’ll never capsize so why worry—and if you do, heck, “just climb back in.” All it will take is one idiot to get tangled up in his gadget-rigged fishing kayak and

it with a sense of responsibility and a leaning to safety on the water. Tom Watson via email
Catch, photograph, and fry?
I just picked up Kayak Angler for the first time and I have to say it was a great read. All the informative articles and ads helped me buy my first kayak. I went from a small jon boat, to canoe, now a kayak. I do have only one unfavorable comment about the “Catch Photograph Release,” not really to the maga- zine but to the people who sent in the pic- tures. I do believe a couple of those were not caught and released. I know all of us fisher-
I just wanted to say thank you for sending the box of magazines to me over here in Iraq. I had talked to a few of the guys over here about my favorite hobby, but I don’t think they really understood what I was talk- ing about until your magazines showed up. I have been fielding questions and talking about kayak fishing with them ever since! It has been great and really liſted the spirits of those of us with a lot of fishing stories to tell! And while the kayak aspect is totally new to most of these guys, your magazine, along with my propensity to talk about it, has helped to open their eyes to the possibilities that await them when they get back to the States. I’m sure we will have a few new par- ticipants in the sport in a few months. Since I am spending the whole summer over here, I probably won’t get to do much fishing myself this year so I am living vicariously through all my friends in the kayak fishing commu- nity. I saw many friends and acquaintances in your magazine and it brought back memo- ries of better times. LT Marty Mood, U.S. Navy Al Asad AB, Iraq
Sunrise on the flats
I took this photo just aſter sunrise on May 9, 2008, from my kayak while fishing the Indian River in Fort Pierce, Florida. I was concen- trating on catching snook and spotted seat- rout on a grass flat and just happened to look to the east and catch this shot from my Ocean Kayak Prowler 15.
