as the shore division, and as far as I know is still the only kayak tournament on the Great Lakes. Te kayak division is strictly for chinook salmon, thus if you want to count a rainbow, brown or lake trout, or coho salmon you would need to also compete in the pow- erboat division. Te entry fee for the kayak division is $20 and for the powerboat division it’s $30 per individual, thus as a kayaker you can compete in both for only $50. As of June, the fishing on the

Great Lakes still hadn’t taken off due to the low water temps. White bass are abundant at the mouth of the rivers, harbors, and canals, to the point it can be a nuisance if you are targeting other species. In the canals, concentrate on dark retaining walls having the lon- gest time with sun exposure and fish a minnow on a bobber setup right next to these walls and you will catch more crappie that you would need for dinner. Te first weekend in Septem-

ber is the Michigan Kayak Fish- ing club fall salmon trip to Sleep- ing Bear Dunes between Glen Haven and Glen Arbor on Lake Michigan. Te small bay we fish is well protected from wind and powerboat traffic is next to non- existent. Te fish at that time of the year can be found in 30 to 50 feet of water and thus downrig- gers, Dipsy Divers and lead-core line are really not required. Most of us use Hot ‘N Tots or similar deep-diving lures to catch the majority of our fish. Where we camp is only a 100-yard roll with the kayaks to where we launch. Tis is as relaxing a kayak fishing trip as it gets.

kayak anglers on local waterways enjoying the sport of kayak fish- ing. Publicity for kayak angling in this region has been steadily increasing due in part to Kayak Angler magazine and three active message boards, KayakAnglerOn- line.com, CanadianKayakAnglers. com and YakFisher.net. All web- sites feature fishing tips, reports and photos. Tese online commu- nities are gaining new members daily and organize group outings to meet new people. Te growth of the sport in

Ontario is also apparent with more outfitters including fishing kayaks and accessories in their rental fleets. Nomad Adventure Company out of Waterloo, On- tario, and Trailhead Outfitters in Ottawa are also offering intro- ductory kayak angling clinics. Larry Showler, owner of Fron- tenac Outfitters in Sydenham, Ontario, reports an eight-fold increase in the number of kayak fishing inquiries. He believes the sport may see the same growth here as in the U.S. Early season reports from east-

ern Ontario and western Quebec are seeing kayaks used to target a variety of species. One interest- ing report was from a few Otta- wa-based kayak anglers mixing in with powerboats driſting in the strong currents of the Ottawa River below the Carillion Dam. Anglers were fishing the annual three-week American shad run. Marco Potvin of Gatineau, Que- bec, had great success with the scrappy shad and landed catfish, walleye and sauger as well. Summer has everyone excited.

Maritime anglers will be out in the Bay of Fundy searching for striped bass and Ontario an- glers will be paddling around the Kawartha Lakes and the Rideau River system in search of bass and muskies in the shallows.
