IN A NUTSHELL

Despite the lack of “complete” in the title, still one of the most comprehensive overviews of kayak fishing from a fishing-first perspective.

Sparse, but a good overview of kayaking for the newbie with some Gulf Coast–specific tidbits and cool illustrations.

Innovative in its look at canoes and pontoon boats as well as kayaks. Idiosyncratic, with an emphasis on Greenland- style paddling and fly-fishing.

“Everything you need to know about catching river smallmouths.” A 2nd generation ‘yak fishing book that wisely targets a species and matches kayak info to the fish.

A beginner-friendly guide to choosing a kayak, outfitting with rod-holders and electronics, storage, anchoring systems, safety and more.

Thorough intro to the sport from choosing a kayak to landing a fish in every type of water, with an overview of fishing hotspots and a resource guide in the back.

A solid foundation of skills for the new kayak angler and tips and tricks for experienced angler in a photo-rich coffee table presentation.

A STRINGER FULL OF KAYAK FISHING BOOKS It seems you can’t talk to a pro kayak fisherman these days without hearing about their new or upcoming book. With several claiming to be the “complete” or “ultimate” guide, how do they stack up? We raided the shelves for all the classics and new releases.

KAYAK-TO-FISHING RATIO

80% fishing-centric. For example, one chapter on kayak strokes to five chapters on kayak fishing. The section on “flipping” is about presentations in heavy cover.

80% kayak-centric: Two- thirds covers kayak gear, skills and safety. Page 55 of 75 says, “Now you’re ready to fish.”

80% boat-centric and very general. About 10 pages on kayak fishing techniques.

90% bass-centric. Chapter 3 includes 35 pages on locating fish, with info about seasonal water temps, current, structure and cover, etc., and quotes from local experts.

80% kayaking and rigging. The first 154 pages get you rigged, paddling and ready to fish. The final chapter is a roundup of regional fishing tips.

A 50/50 blend of ‘yak and fish info that lives up to the “complete” label including details on fishing gear and lure selection for saltwater and fresh.

50/50 kayaking and fishing with an emphasis on general skills and strategy. Assumes you know fishing basics and leaves tackle and lure selection to you.
