Tegris (polypropylene thermoplastic)
The new kid on the block is Tegris (formerly marketed as MFT). This is a polypropylene thermoplastic that is molded under heat and very high pressure. The resulting parts are said to be both very durable and lightweight. Tegris is currently only being used by one company, Native Watercraft. To date, relatively few boats have been built, so there is only very limited real world experience of kayaks made from this new material.
Pennington feels early angler involve-
ment and improvements in the MLPA public process explain the more equita- ble outcome to the north. “My gut feeling is that outcome is more in line with what the MLPA is all about,” Pennington said. Tat’s encouraging news for South-
ern California’s kayak anglers. Teir crowded stretch of coast—arguably the birthplace of modern kayak fishing— will be the next to face the MLPA trial. Te process will get underway in Oc- tober. In a place where every underwa- ter rock is someone’s fishing hole, there are sure to be losers. Locals hope they can hang onto spots like glitzy Malibu and legendary La Jolla. “If we lose La Jolla, we lose our jewel.
Kayak fishing as we know it would be over,” Jim Sammons of La Jolla Kayak Fishing said.
