Climate change
Reduce CO2 emissions by 10% by 2010 and 20% by 2020, relative to sales. – In Progress -16% reduction (2001/02 baseline).
Improve energy efficiency by 20% by 2010. - In Progress - 19% improvement (2003/04 baseline).
Source all electricity from green sources by October 2007. – Achieved - 100% electricity from green sources through EDF Energy.
Reduce miles driven year on year (per £million sales) . –Achieved - 4,424 miles driven per £million sales (2% decrease).
Continue £55 million refrigeration replacement programme – In Progress – Third of 5 year programme


Packaging, waste and recycling
Recycle 75% of all waste by year-end 2012. - In Progress - 49% of waste recycled.
Eliminate growth in packaging by year end 2008. - Achieved -36% reduction since 2000 relative to sales.
Apply packaging identification labelling to own-brand products by end 2009 - In Progress – Phased in from July 2008
Widen availability of long-life reusable carrier bags; increase recycled material in plastic carrier bags. - Achieved – Nearly 4 million Bags for Life handed out (63% increase); trialling bags with 33% recycled content; BfL to contain 100% recycled material in new year


Building and operating sustainable shops
Recycle more of our building waste and increase the use of recycled materials in new builds to 25%. - In Progress - Over 20% of construction materials from recycled sources.
Apply Sustainable Construction Framework to all new builds; achieve BREEAM 'excellent' status or equivalent. - In Progress - All new builds start with Sustainability Action Plan, sustainability principles
adopted at every stage of project; work towards BREEAM status ongoing.


Supplier relationships
95% of own-brand suppliers to register on Sedex and complete self assessment. - Achieved – 99% registered on Sedex, and completed our information requirements.
Extend Waitrose Foundation across all fruit categories, purchase first in-trust farm. - Achieved – Product extended from citrus fruit to all categories from South Africa, continuing to explore opportunities for purchasing in-trust farm.


Sustainable products
Double Fairtrade food sales by end 2008. - In Progress - 76% increase in sales (2006 baseline)
Support Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil; develop Sustainable Palm Oil strategy. - In Progress - Membership of RSPO; ongoing strategy development.


Health and nutrition
Continue to roll out front-of-pack 'traffic light' labelling on categories recommended by FSA. - In Progress - First retailer to use FSA’s labelling; now on wide range of products.
Improve healthy options offer. - In Progress - Ongoing reduction of artificial flavours, and additives; new black-and white nutrition labelling being phased in by March 2009.


Supporting our communities
Contribute at least 1% of Partnership pre-tax profits to community initiatives. - Achieved - 1.63% of pre-tax profits contributed.
Using LBG model, improve measurement of outputs/impacts of community programmes. - In Progress - Total contributions: £6,191,098 (6% increase); implementing systems to improve measurement.
Increase Partner participation in employee volunteering. . - Achieved - 96,846 hours contributed (an increase of nearly 60%).


Partners
Improve average Waitrose response rate/score in Partner survey. - Achieved - Waitrose response rate: 94% (target: 85%); average score: 12.3 (target: 12).
Implement Partnership-wide career break policy. - Achieved - Policy introduced July 2006.
Expand diversity awareness training for managers. - In Progress - Diversity Toolkit in development; training driven by local needs.
