HIFFFILMS 28TH LOUIS VUITTON HAWAII INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
KANTATA TAKWA
ASIAN SHOWCASE | U.S. PREMIERE
Using animation and live action, three directors turn music, theatre and film into a new unity. The film’s title
KANTATA TAKWA (named after the orchestra) stands for the ‘kantata’ of love, comprising patience, dedica-
tion and sincerity – a state of mind that strives for dignity and humanism. As co-director Eros Djarot says:
“The central question is: What for? What do we live for in this bloody world? If we can’t answer this ques-
tion, we’re finished.” Despite the independent status and the experimental nature of the film, it had a rela-
tively large budget thanks to the support of the oil billionaire Djodi Setiewan, who also
has a walk-on role in the film. The three directors come together from different
backgrounds in their attempt to search for the roots of Indonesian culture. – SIFF

THE WRECKING CREW
AMERICAN SPECTRUM | HAWAII PREMIERE
The session musicians of The Wrecking Crew were the unsung heroes of popular music. During the ‘60s,
they played on hits for dozens of popular singers such as the Beach Boys, Phil Spector, the Monkees, Sonny
& Cher, the Mamas and the Papas, and Frank and Nancy Sinatra. These musicians performed on thousands
of records, film and television soundtracks that defined popular culture in the swinging ‘60s. They provided
that unquantifiable magic that sent songs to the top of the Billboard charts. And yet, as hard as they
worked, their names were completely unknown – until now. THE WRECKING CREW features interviews
with the surviving members of the group as well as American music icons such as Dick Clark, Brian Wilson,
Cher, Nancy Sinatra and Micky Dolenz. – Jason Soeda

THE KILLING OF A CHINESE COOKIE
AMERICAN SPECTRUM | HAWAII PREMIERE
For nearly a century, people have turned to this prophetic dessert for advice, inspiration, and even winning
lottery combinations. While the fortune cookie has been a source of fascination and a Chinese cuisine staple
in North America, it remains nearly non-existent in China. This film will examine the heated debate over the
true origin of the fortune cookie, the mixing of eastern and western cultures that produced it, and the cook-
ie’s rise from a simple pastry to a pop culture phenomenon.
