Clara, a forty year old ‘tai tai’ (wealthy lady of leisure) faces a mid
life crisis and decides to run away to the only place that has ever
made any sense to her - the shopping centers. As she lives there,
Clara crosses paths with Renu, an eight-year old latchkey kid who
has been abandoned by her parents in a 24-hour mall and Aaron,
an angst-y twenty three-year old who skips work to hang out at
the mall with his friends. Together, they find love, loss and libera-
tion in the heart of Singapore.

GOOD CATS HAO MAO
NARRATIVE FEATURE COMPETITION | U.S. PREMIERE
The name of the film is taken from reformist politician Deng
Xiaoping's principle that it doesn't matter if a cat is black or white
-- as long as it catches mice, it's a good cat. The ends justifying
the means mentality paints a picture of modern-day China tainted
by a money-hungry rat race. GOOD CATS follow the irresponsible
life of the main protagonist; a chauffeur for the head of a real-
estate agency, while showing the changes that rapid urbanization
has brought to Sichuan. In the director's vision, human existence
is dominated by impalpable paradoxes, and day-to-day life is per-
meated with surreal events playing out on the border between
reality, absurdity and hallucination.

SHI QI SEVENTEEN
NARRATIVE FEATURE COMPETITION | U.S. PREMIERE
A modest tale of a teen son reconciling with his mother, SHI QI
gains depth from an understated performance by Joan Chen. Set
among the She minority in a hilly region of Zhejiang, story begins
with a village celebration for teen Tianyi (Vision Wei), who's going
abroad to study. Tianyi character functions as a contrast to the
main character, one of his old friends, Zhong Qiqi (Sam Chow) –
aka Shi Qi "Seventeen" – who's holed up at home. Alienated from
his mom (Chen), who supposedly abandoned him at age 2 and
took him back eight years later, Shi Qi feels he's been robbed of
life's chances, and finally determines to leave his hometown. But
mom comes along for the ride, leading to a gradual rapproche-
ment and the revelation of a secret. – Variety
