A win on the electronic assignment submission front
By Koren Helbig, electronic assignment submission campaign co-ordinator
Electronic assignment submissions could be a step closer, thanks to the Distance Campus
Committee and... you!
After months of hard work – and much support from Deakin University students, which resulted in
nearly 600 online petition signatures – the university has officially put electronic submissions back on
the agenda.
There is an agreement to explore options for electronic assignment submissions and the possibility of
external funding to ensure the investigations continue.
It’s an exciting development, and one that wouldn’t have been possible without the fabulous
response to the online petition, which formed the backbone of our submission to Deakin.
We proposed that electronic submissions be made available for all students, including both on-
campus and off-campus, and that the postal option be retained in order to be fair for everyone,
including those who may have limited Internet access.
We pointed out that the establishment of such a service would directly benefit one of the largest
student demographics at Deakin – distance students!
Thanks must go to DUSA president Cayla Edwards, who met with key Deakin University players
several times to question the practicality and inequality of postal submission, as voiced by students.
Of course, there’s still work to be done but it’s great to know the university is finally listening. Watch
this space for further developments!
